BARGE Treasure Island Tour: Sat 10/11

The Treasure Island Tour this Saturday is fully booked; however there may very well be open seats due to last-minute cancellations so feel free to show up at Yerba Buena Center by noon on Sat if you want to get on the wait list. details below:

TREASURE ISLAND TOUR
This Saturday, as part of Yerba Buena Center's "Ground Scores" exhibit,
BARGE (the Bay Area Research Group in Enviro-aesthetics) will lead a (de)tour of
Treasure Island, as part of its "Buried Treasure Island" installation
currently on view at YBCA. How do we encounter a man-made island and former military
base in the middle of the bay, and how might we envision other ways of seeing in
the midst of hazardous waste areas, boarded-up buildings, and other uncanny sites
and sights? The tour will explore how we view a landscape's past, present, and
possible futures, when many of its features are either destroyed, invisible, or
strangely, hidden in plain sight.

Saturday, October 11, 12-4pm
Tour shuttle departs from (& returns to) Yerba Buena Center - meet in lobby.
There will be some walking, so wear comfortable shoes. It can be quite cold &
windy on the island, so bring layers. In case of rain, some outdoor activities may
be curtailed but the tour will go on!
(De)tourists are encouraged to bring cameras (and/or their imaginations) for counter-postcard
opportunities.

More thank yous

Some thank you’s that inadvertently got left out of the guidebook:

Tanya Hollis @ the California Historical Society, Jocelyn Saidenberg @ SF Public Library Archives, CA Conrad & his (Soma)tic Midge, Kim Rosenfield for turning me on to Maurice Apprey, Thom Donovan for inviting me to stage an improvisatory investigation into method at Peace on A, Ara Shirinyan, Joseph Mosconi, & Andrew Maxwell at the Poetic Research Bureau in LA, for inviting me to do some further impromptu speculation on the project-in-progress, & Kimberly Johansson for her critical eye.

The Geomatrix

Perimeter Dikes at the Treasure Island Naval Station, U.S. Navy, Western Division, San Francisco Bay, CA. Project manager responsible for evaluating liquefaction potential, assessing seismic dike stability and deformation, estimating shaking-induced ground settlement, and assessing the performance of building foundations and underground utilities. Work included reviewing pre- and post-construction records and subsurface data; drilling, sampling, and logging exploratory borings; performing cone penetrometer testing; and mapping ground cracks. To mitigate future hazards, Geomatrix recommended stabilizing perimeter dikes, modifying foundation systems of structures, and raising ground elevations to prevent flooding. Based on feasibility evaluations of possible design schemes for dike stabilization, we identified three alternatives (stone columns, deep soil mixing, and rock berms) as being preferable and most cost-effective.
